in Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) Vehicles
In a rear-wheel drive (RWD) vehicle, the differential has a very important function when the vehicle turns.
🚗 Main Function of a Differential
The differential allows the left and right wheels to rotate at different speeds.
🛞 Why Is This Important When Turning?
When a vehicle is turning (menikung):
- The outer wheel travels a longer distance
- The inner wheel travels a shorter distance
Because the distances are different:
- The outer wheel must rotate faster
- The inner wheel must rotate slower
If both wheels were forced to rotate at the same speed (like a solid axle without a differential):
- One tire would slip or drag
- Tires would wear faster
- The vehicle would feel jerky
- It could cause “ngesrot” (tire scrubbing)
- Steering becomes harder
⚙️ How Power Flows in an RWD Vehicle
Engine → Transmission → Driveshaft → Differential → Rear Wheels
Inside the differential are gears that:
- Split engine torque to both wheels
- Allow speed difference between left and right wheels
📌 Example Situation
Imagine the vehicle is turning left:
- Right wheel (outer wheel) rotates faster
- Left wheel (inner wheel) rotates slower
The differential automatically adjusts this difference smoothly.
