How Airplane Wings Create Lift – And Why Spoilers Matter
✈️ Lift Force and Speed Needed for an Airplane to Fly
Airfoil Animation & Stall Physics Explanation
1️⃣ Fundamental Rule of Flight
Lift = Weight
An airplane remains in the air when lift equals weight.
2️⃣ Lift Equation
L = 1/2 ρ V² S CL
Lift increases rapidly with speed because velocity is squared.
3️⃣ Airfoil and Airflow Animation
Air accelerates over the top surface and is deflected downward behind the wing, producing lift.
4️⃣ Lift Curve vs Angle of Attack

Angle of Attack

Stall
Lift increases with angle of attack until maximum lift is reached. After this point, airflow separates and lift drops.
⚠ STALL WARNING: When airflow separates from the wing surface, lift decreases suddenly even if engine power remains.
5️⃣ Boeing 737 Takeoff Example
V ≈ 75 m/s ≈ 270 km/h
Typical Boeing 737 rotation speed is around 240–290 km/h.
6️⃣ Key Insight
The wing must push enough air downward, fast enough, to support the airplane’s weight.
