Herman Willem Daendels

Herman Willem Daendels was the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies who ruled from 1808 to 1811, during the period when the Netherlands was under the influence of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Important actions and policies of Daendels:

  • Built the Great Post Road (Anyer–Panarukan), a road about 1,000 km long across Java.
  • Strengthened Java’s defenses against possible British attacks.
  • Reorganized the colonial administration and military system.
  • Known for his authoritarian and harsh leadership, as many Indonesians were forced to perform corvée labor (forced labor) to build the road.

Main objective: To strengthen Dutch colonial defense in Java.


Thomas Stamford Raffles

Thomas Stamford Raffles was a British administrator who governed Java when Britain took control of the Dutch East Indies after the British invasion of Java (1811).

His administration lasted from 1811 to 1816.

Important actions and policies of Raffles:

  • Abolished much of the forced labor system previously used by Daendels.
  • Introduced the land rent system, where farmers paid tax for the land they used.
  • Conducted research on Javanese culture, history, and society.
  • Wrote the famous book The History of Java (1817).
  • Helped bring global attention to Borobudur Temple.

He is also well known as the founder of Singapore in 1819.
