Decision Support System (DSS)

A Decision Support System (DSS) is an interactive, computer-based information system designed to help decision-makers compile useful information from a combination of raw data, documents, personal knowledge, and/or business models to identify and solve problems and make decisions.

Core Characteristics

  • User-Control: Tailored primarily for non-technical managers and operational users to interact directly without requiring an intermediary programmer.
  • Semi-Structured & Unstructured Focus: Designed specifically for complex scenarios where rules are not entirely clear-cut and human judgment is critical.
  • Data & Model Integration: Combines relational databases or data warehouses with analytical models, simulation tools, and forecasting algorithms.

Knowledge Management (KM)

Knowledge Management (KM) is the systematic process of creating, capturing, storing, sharing, and effectively applying organizational knowledge to drive efficiency, innovation, and strategic decision-making.

Core Dimensions

  • Tacit Knowledge: Insights, intuition, and experiences held individually by people, typically transferred through mentorship, collaboration, and storytelling.
  • Explicit Knowledge: Documented information captured in databases, manuals, procedures, memos, and digital repositories that can be readily accessed and shared.
  • The KM Lifecycle:
    1. Creation/Capture: Acquiring new insights or documenting existing expertise.
    2. Storage/Organization: Structuring content into searchable repositories or wikis.
    3. Dissemination: Distributing relevant information to the right people at the right time.
    4. Application: Utilizing the shared knowledge to solve business problems and foster innovation.
